How To Start Using A Pendulum
Ready to start using a pendulum?
I can bet that you may have a bit of apprehension when it comes to working with one. I want to calm your fears.
You will find that using a pendulum can be approached from one of two ways - either as a link to your subconscious mind or to connect with your spirit guides.
It’s your choice as with how you work with any magical tool.
Why should you use a pendulum?
Because it's a great way to find out what you should do or what you really desire to do.
Now, you may be kinda scared to use a pendulum like I was thinking I would be something a little too witchy. But it really isn't. That is the cool thing about why you should use a pendulum.
I love to research everything to find out where the truth lies because as you know any information you find out there is shared by someone based on their opinion (and maybe research) on how they understand the subject. Somewhere in the middle, you'll find the truth.
Like you, I always start off my research as a skeptic. I need to see the proof for myself before I share anything. Of course, whatever I share with you means that you need to discover if this is true for you, too.
What Is A Pendulum?
It's a tool where a crystal (or another object with some weight called the Bob") is at the end of a chain that you hold between your index finger and thumb.
Pendulums used in dowsing have been used for years to locate water, gold, and to assist doctors in making diagnoses. Sound crazy?
Not really... check out this video on the Backster Effect where Cleve Backster attached a polygraph machine to a plant. The result? Everything has consciousness.
Pendulums allow you to focus on the issue at hand when you've got a billion and one ideas swirling through your head.
What Is A Pendulum Used For Spiritually?
If you’d like to use the pendulum for spiritual purposes, that would mean that you’d like to use it to communicate with your guides to help you make a decision.
The History Of Using Pendulums
Pendulums have been used for years to locate water, gold, and to assist doctors in making diagnoses.
The history of using pendulums for divination traces back over 5,000 years becoming very popular in the Middle Ages.
Ancient Egyptians believed pendulums were magic and Romans use pendulums for divine guidance to help them solve their problems.
And I’m sure you’ve seen people use a pendulum to figure out the sex of an unborn baby. If the pendulum moved in a circle, the baby is a girl and back and forth meant the baby was a boy.
How To Make A Pendulum
If you can't afford a pendulum you can make your own. A simple piece of string with one end of the string tied around a small metal washer on one end can be your first pendulum. You can also wire wrap a crystal and attach it to a chain.
You can also use a necklace, a ring or a key on a chain. You can use anything you have on hand that has some weight to put on the end of a string or chain.
Easy Way To Use A Pendulum
When I first started working with my pendulum, I sat at my desk so I could rest my elbow on the top of the desk. You might want to try it this way first until you get the hang of it.
Hold the chain of your pendulum between your index finger and thumb in your dominant hand or drape the chain over your index finger.
Ask the pendulum (vocally or with your mind) to show you what a "Yes" answer swing is. For me, the pendulum swings back and forth.
Then, ask the pendulum to show you what a "No" answer swing is. The pendulum, for me, will swing to the left and right.
If you'd like to also ask what your "maybe" answer looks like, you can go ahead and ask that, too. My pendulum goes in a circle.
Now, start asking the pendulum for answers to questions that are about things that you know like "is the sky blue?" or "is my hair brown?" This will give you time to practice getting answers.
Once you're certain of how your pendulum gives you answers you can't start asking it the questions you really want the answers to.
How Does A Pendulum Work?
Your thoughts make the pendulum work. Many people, myself included, believe that a pendulum is a way to connect to your subconscious mind. Others believe that you’re working with it to divine information from your spirit guides.
The important thing to remember is that you're not swinging it around (or at least you shouldn’t be), but holding it so that it can show you by the way that it swings what you already know to be true in your subconscious.
I think that it' can be viewed as a similar practice to muscle testing. With muscle testing, one way to try it is to make a circle by touching your thumb and index finger. Then interlock your other hand’s thumb and index finger into another circle. You then ask yourself a question and try to pull your interlocking fingers apart.
A strong ‘yes’ answer won’t allow you to pull the fingers apart, but a ‘no’ answer breaks the fingers apart easily.
Is A Pendulum Always Right?
It depends on you and the energy you bring when you're working with it. If you anxious or have too much excitement it may not give you an accurate response. You may also be willing the answer you want to appear.
To get the right answer take a deep breath, clear your mind (the best you can if you're mind is always racing like mine is) and relax.
How To Use A Pendulum Safely
As with any spiritual practice, you should create a ritual that works for you that you do each and every time. All energy work that you do whether it is with a pendulum or tarot cards is real and the possibility for both light and dark energies to pop up is possible.
Remember, take caution before any of your sacred spiritual practices by performing your sacred spiritual ritual.
Also, don’t worry about what any spiritual guru wants to tell you - your ritual for protection can be as simple or as intricate as you want.
Before:
Smudge with palo santo or white sage. If you can’t burn stuff, you can spray a cleansing mist.
Open a sacred circle using a wand or a selenite wand, clockwise asking that only your spirit guides and angels that are working in service of the Highest Good to be allowed into your circle.
After:
Release your sacred circle with your wand, and go counter-clockwise, by giving thanks to your spirit guides and angels who protected you during this work and release them from the circle.
Smudge (or spray your cleansing mist) and ground yourself by imagining your roots digging deep into the earth’s and wrapping around the anchoring core.
How To Cleanse Your Pendulum
Like any of your other spiritual tools, you can run them through the smoke of your sage or palo santo. When I do this my pendulums seem to do a very happy dance in the smoke.
The alternative methods to cleanse your pendulum include:
Place your pendulum on top of a piece of selenite
Bury the pendulum in a bowl of salt
Place it within a bowl of crystals or on top of a crystal cluster
Put it in a singing bowl and strike to the bowl or strike a singing bowl over a pendulum
Let it take a full moon bath
Which Crystal Is Best For Pendulum?
You’ve got a lot of choices if you’re looking for a crystal pendulum. While you don’t need a crystal pendulum, you can certainly get one that you’re connected to.
The general good for all uses crystal for pendulums is quartz. Just as clear quartz is the best, go-to crystal for practically every need it is also true for the pendulum.
But that’s not your only option. Two of my favorite pendulums are my Angelite and Scolecite pendulums.
My Angelite pendulum also has a sliver of selenite. It’s actually a necklace that I converted into a pendulum.
My Scolecite pendulum has an Azurite blueberry on top.
How Do You Ask A Pendulum A Question?
Asking a question, while using the pendulum, begins with making sure that you phrase your questions correctly.
You won't get an answer if you ask a question like "Should I move to Texas or Idaho?" The pendulum won't be able to give you an answer because you're asking it to do something that it can't.
Instead, you would need to ask it two questions 1) Should I move to Texas? and then 2) Should I move to Idaho?
You can ask other questions like:
Is it in my best interest to quit my job and go to college?
Is it a good idea to take Oak Street home from work?
Should I read this book?
Is it in my best interest to look for a new job?
Would it be worthwhile to study this subject?
Sometimes I use my pendulum to help me decide which crystal I should bring home next. Try it out and see how it works for you.
I’m going to encourage you to learn how to use a pendulum for seven days in a row. This will give you time to see how a pendulum works and if it’s a tool you’d like to have in your woo-woo toolbox. I think you might just keep it as a permanent tool.
